(Gabino Barreda) front flap (b. 1818, Puebla; d. 1881, Mexico City; studied law, chemistry and medicine; in 1851 he traveled to Paris and was a disciple of Auguste Comte; on his return he devoted himself to teaching; practiced medicine in Guanajuato during the Empire of Maximilian; when the Republic was restored he was part of the commission that drafted the Ley Orgánica de Educación Primaria which established elementary education as obligatory, free and secular; founded the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria and was its director from 1867 to 1868; his ideological posture led him to create the Asociación Metodófila, with the mission of introducing positivism into Mexico, which was to become the official doctrine of both education and the state)
